Well hello there!
Hi there! My name is Marisa (it rhymes with Lisa!) I'm a librarian with the Prince George's County Memorial Library System, managing services with a smile and style at the Beltsville Branch.
For those who would like to know, I am okay with she/her and they/them pronouns.
What am I doing here?
The Beltsville Branch Library has been chosen as the location for PGCMLS's Life Lab, an information center dedicated to workforce development. I'm also a bit of a nerd (I've been editing Wikipedia since high school, and, well...I am a librarian!), and I want to make sure I've got as much information available to make the life lab a success. I'm looking forward to contributing and learning as much as I can during this project.
"Fun Facts" (Allegedly)
- My name was mispronounced by the justice of the peace at my own wedding, so I wasn't sure if it was legal for a few days.
- I once planned a library program that involved a catapult. It was approved.
- I'm de facto banned for life from at least one country (not as bad as it sounds - feel free to ask for details.)
- I have three trophies for hog calling.
- I am one of those awful millennials (born in the 80s! Coming for your avocado toast!)
Okay, an actual biography for you
Marisa Strakovsky is an American librarian, educator, and research enthusiast. Interested in computers from a young age, she began designing webpages at age 10; by 18, she had developed a monetized website she used to pay for her tuition. She attended Mount St. Mary's University and completed a BA with a double major in English and Philosophy with a minor in history, where she also worked as an official tutor and class transcriber for students with disabilities. Entering the workforce during the end of the Great Recession, she found a job at a public library out of sheer luck, and loved it enough to commit to grad school. She completed her MLS from Clarion University of Pennsylvania specializing in metadata while working full time in 2015. She is now a Librarian III (branch supervisor) within PGCMLS, with years of experience with developing STEM programming, assisting patrons with technology issues, and reading books using weird voices to preschoolers. She's a native of Dundalk, Maryland in Baltimore County, and has lived in Maryland her entire life.
Professionally, she has worked as an instructor for Girls Who Code and Crazy 8s Math Club. She also developed PGCMLS's first "STEM-tastic: Black Engineers" program, and is an active member of YALSA.
Marisa is proudly a first-generation college graduate and a first generation mainlander in her father's Puerto Rican family.
She lives in northern Prince George's County with her husband Alexey and their two cats, Noodle and Munchkin. In her spare time, Marisa enjoys travel, singing, playing piano, musical theater, cooking, and video games. She also loves being the "weird aunt" to her five nieces and nephews.
